How Fostering (Even for a Weekend) Changes Lives
Every June, National Foster a Pet Month allows us to raise awareness about one of the most important ways people can help shelter animals: fostering. At North Fork Animal Welfare League, we see firsthand how fostering helps animals decompress, build confidence, and prepare for life in a forever home. Here are some things we want our community to know.
Dog Sleepovers Are Fostering Too
You do not have to commit to months of fostering to make a meaningful difference. Even taking a dog home for a night or a weekend through our sleepover program can have a huge impact.
These short breaks from shelter life give dogs the chance to relax, recharge, and experience the comfort of a home environment. For many dogs, it may be their first time sleeping on a couch, going for a neighborhood walk, or simply enjoying peace and quiet.
A sleepover may feel small to you, but to a shelter dog, it can mean everything.
Why Foster Care Matters
While we work hard to make our shelter a safe and loving place, shelter life can still be stressful for animals. Constant activity, unfamiliar sounds, and limited downtime can be overwhelming, especially for dogs who are adjusting to a new environment.
Foster homes help dogs:
● Relax outside the shelter
● Learn household routines
● Build confidence in new environments
● Receive extra attention and socialization
● Prepare for a successful adoption
Even temporary fostering gives dogs valuable experiences that help them thrive.
The Benefits of Our Dog Sleepover Program
Our sleepover program is designed to give dogs a much-needed break while also helping us learn more about them outside the shelter.
Sleepovers Give Dogs a Mini Vacation
Sometimes, a short escape from kennel life can dramatically improve a dog’s mood and stress levels. A cozy home, a comfy bed, and one-on-one attention can help dogs reset emotionally.
Sleepovers Help Us Learn More About Their Personalities
Dogs often behave differently in a home than they do in a shelter setting. Sleepovers help us understand the following better:
Energy levels
House manners
Comfort around children or visitors
Car ride behavior
Favorite activities and routines
These insights help us make better matches when it comes time for adoption.
Sleepovers Help Dogs Prepare for a Forever Home
For some dogs, living in a home environment is completely new. Sleepovers help them practice important everyday experiences like:
Sleeping through the night in a home
Navigating stairs and furniture
Settling into routines
Feeling comfortable around people in a quieter setting
These experiences can make future transitions much smoother.
You Do Not Need to Be a “Perfect” Foster
One of the biggest misconceptions about fostering is that people think they need special training, a large home, or endless free time. The truth is that fostering can fit many different lifestyles.
Some people foster for several weeks. Others participate in occasional weekend sleepovers. Every form of fostering matters, and every act of kindness helps animals move one step closer to finding the right home.
You do not have to be perfect. You simply have to care.
Fostering Helps Us Save More Lives
When animals spend time in foster homes, it also creates additional space and resources at the shelter for incoming animals who need help.
Fostering allows us to:
Reduce stress for shelter animals
Improve adoption success
Learn more about each dog’s needs
Help more animals in our community
It truly takes a community effort, and fosters are an essential part of that mission.
How You Can Help This June
This National Foster a Pet Month, we encourage our community to consider opening their home, even temporarily, to a shelter animal. Whether it’s a weekend sleepover, a short-term foster placement, or simply helping spread the word, every effort makes a meaningful difference.
Sometimes, all it takes is one peaceful weekend in a loving home to help a dog feel safe, confident, and one step closer to finding the right family.
Ready to Make a Difference?
If you have ever considered fostering, this is the perfect time to get involved. Whether you can open your home for a few weeks or simply give a dog a relaxing weekend away from the shelter, your support can have a life-changing impact.
