20 Dogs Rescued From Hoarder Headed To North Fork, Need Homes
36 dogs, including 20 from a hoarder home, are headed to the shelter Saturday looking for forever homes. "They deserve a real family."
PECONIC, NY — The North Fork Animal Welfare League's shelter in Peconic will be filled to the rafters Saturday as a total of 36 rescue dogs arrive — and help, in the form of forever homes, fosters, and financial assistance, is desperately needed, staffers said.
According to NFAWL Director of Operations Gabrielle Stroup, a partner shelter in Georgia that was already full and euthanizing dogs for space had to handle a hoarding case and ended up with 20 Chiweenies.
"We could not say no to helping out. So these dogs and 16 others, from another shelter in Georgia, will be heading to the North Fork tonight," she said.
The dogs will be ready at the shelter, located at 269 Peconic Lane in Peconic, anytime after 2 p.m. Saturday; the NFAWL is open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for visiting.
With such a packed house, Stroup had to move everything at the shelter to make room for the new additions.
Some of the dogs are also pregnant, Stroup said.
Adopters, fosters, and financial donations for the dogs' medical care are all needed, Stroup said.
"I'm hoping we can get them into foster or adopted homes ASAP," she said. "They deserve a real family."
No appointments are necessary to see the dogs but applications will be accepted in-person only.
