Southold & Riverhead
Animal Shelters

North Fork Animal Welfare League is a
no-kill shelter with two locations on the east end of Long Island in both Southold and Riverhead Townships.

Pets For Vets

We are excited to announce our new program, Pets For Vets!

We are dedicated to providing a second chance for shelter pets by pairing them with America’s veterans. This program is designed to make adoption affordable for approved veterans. At the time of application, the veteran must show a letter from their doctor stating this veteran will benefit from adopting a companion animal.

Who Is Eligible?

All veterans who would benefit from an animal companion.

Our Goal

We recognize the sacrifice made by those in the military. The purpose of our program is to support the mutually beneficial relationship and positive benefits of a connection between animals and veterans. Our program allows veterans to connect with animals in unique ways, including constant companion support, pet food and supplies, help (when available), and reduced adoption fees.

SUPPORT The League

Help us save dogs from high kill shelters.

Since Covid began sheltering has changed; we have learned new ways to help, rescue, and find homes for animals in need. We continue to help all animals that need us locally, and we have expanded our reach to shelters that euthanize
animals solely for kennel space.

We are so lucky to have this great community that does not have that problem, and we are lucky to have the space to save these animals at those shelters.

So now we need your help! Please give what you can — $10, $20 — because you know that every little bit counts.
Help us, help more dogs and cats!

Please help us save more lives and help provide spay/neuter, food, and medical assistance for any animal in need!
We appreciate any help.

SOUTHOLD
ANIMAL SHELTER

Located in Peconic the Southold Town shelter serves the homeless, lost, and death row, dogs, cats, and other animals.

Southold Animal Shelter was the first municipal shelter on Long Island to spay and neuter every animal prior to adoption. We were the first on Long Island to institute professional evaluation and temperament testing for sheltered animals. We were the first on Long Island to provide a food pantry program for pets of needy residents in our community.

For the last two decades, we have always received 100% percent satisfaction on every professional inspection. We continue to boast one of the highest adoption rates and lowest euthanasia rates of a municipal shelter in the country.

RIVERHEAD ANIMAL SHELTER

Before

Located in Aquebogue, the Riverhead Town shelter serves the homeless, lost, and death row dogs, cats, and other animals.

The new Riverhead Town Shelter is a model shelter with an energy-efficient design that is bright, airy, and accommodating for the animals in our care and the surrounding community.

The new shelter is clean, spacious, and state-of-the-art, with indoor and outdoor dogs and cats. Areas for animal intake, family bonding, humane education, storage, and administration make the space more functional.

Thank you for helping us achieve this!
You can help us further our goals, save as many animals as possible, and keep our shelters full and safe from euthanization.
